Type 2 Diabetes - Stomach Cancer and the Diabetes Connection

According to an analysis of several studies, preventing stomach cancer is likely a good reason for preventing or controlling diabetes. That's what Investigators at Seoul National University College of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea reported on in the World Journal of Gastroenterology in February 2013.

They looked at the results of seventeen studies of diabetes and stomach cancer, and analyzed them as if they were one study. People diagnosed with diabetes were found to have a 19 percent higher risk of cancer of the stomach than the non-diabetic participants.

The National Cancer Institute expects to see 21,600 new cases of cancer in the stomach in 2013, along with 10,990 deaths. The World Health Organization estimates stomach cancer is responsible for 736,000 deaths per year worldwide.

Stomach cancer can cause a person to feel full after a small meal because the tumor takes up part of the stomach. Loss of appetite and weight loss can also be present. Other signs and symptoms include:
  • abdominal pain,
  • difficulty swallowing,
  • dark stools,
  • belching,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting (sometimes with blood),
  • weakness, and a general feeling of poor health.
Factors other than diabetes can also increase the risk of developing cancer in your stomach:
  • family history of stomach cancer is one.
  • a type of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori, is another. (H. pylori is also responsible for stomach ulcers).
  • stomach inflammation or polyps can also lead to cancer.
  • pernicious anemia, in which patients are unable to absorb vitamin B12, is also associated with the disease, as is smoking.
When stomach cancer is suspected a patient can be given:

1. Barium drinks to swallow and then their stomach is x-rayed. If tumors or other abnormalities are seen...

2. A gastroscopy, in which a tube with a light is put through the mouth and down into the stomach so the radiologist or gastroenterologist can look at the stomach lining directly. A biopsy, in which a small bit of a tumor or other abnormally appearing area is cut out, can be performed. Examining the biopsy specimen under a microscope can finalize the diagnosis.

When stomach cancer is diagnosed, other tests can be performed to determine whether it has spread to other sections of the digestive system or to the bones. The stage at which the cancer is found and whether it has spread can help to determine treatment. Part of the stomach can be removed surgically or chemotherapy or radiotherapy can be used.
To do your best to avoid stomach cancer, eat healthily, exercise regularly, keep your weight under control, and avoid smoking.
Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. The condition need not slowly and inevitably get worse. You can take control of the disease... take back your health and prevent any of the associated complications.

Ways to Control Your Sugar

If you're diabetic, one of the main things you need to do is to control your sugar. You can count carbs, avoid your favorite foods or take more medication. But if you want to skip all that, I have three easy steps to help you control your sugars.

1) Aim for five: try to get five servings of fruits and vegetables in your diet every day. Almost all fruits and vegetables are low in carbohydrates. Even the ones that are higher in carbohydrates often have a lot of fiber and many vitamins and minerals. By incorporating five servings of fruits and vegetables into your diet every day, the majority of your food now become vitamin rich and low-carb. Just count to five.

2) Stick to the water: if you focus on drinking lots of water every day, you won't drink ones that are laced with sugar. Things like juice, coffee, soda and alcohol contain many sugars and little to no nutritional value. Water and unsweetened tea naturally have no sugars or carbohydrates. Try some herbal teas or a large glass of water with a little squeeze of lemon. They are refreshing and delicious.
3) Go for 100%: grains can be one of the biggest sources of carbohydrates in your diet. Simply removing white breads and pastas will limit most of the sugars you eat. If you do choose to eat grain products, make sure it is 100% whole grain. This means it has all the healthy fibers and bran and all of the vitamins and minerals. 100% whole-grains are also digested slower and release the sugars slower. They have more taste and are better for you.

These three tips in your diet will go a long way to helping control your sugars. In the long run, this can lead you to less medication, a healthy life and a longer life. These three things are some of the biggest changes my clients make in their lives and many of them completely reverse their diabetes.
Here's a great recipe to incorporate all three of these tips: Ratatouille.

In a large pan or slow cooker, slowly cook down a large tomato, zucchini, eggplant, onion and mushrooms in just a little water or broth. You can also add peppers and any other garden vegetable. Season with parsley, chervil, and rosemary.

Make a crusty loaf of 100% whole grains for dipping into the juices. Serve with a large glass of water with a sprig of mint in it. It's easy and really delicious.

Healthy and Fulfilling Life despite Diabetes

I'm Deborah Susan, a dietician and personal trainer specializing in nutrition, physical fitness and diabetes diet plan for diabetics. Over the years I've noticed a trend in the questions that diabetics and their family members have been asking. Also, many of my clients had often suggested I not let my knowledge and experience go waste; instead, I should write a book that would help society cope and live a healthy life despite diabetes. A friend recently suggested I start with an article and if I like the response I could write a book.

Although many have said I have a way with words, I must state that I am not a writer or author and have until today, never written so much as an article let alone a book. I've decided to take the plunge primarily because I have seen intense and unnecessary suffering caused by wrong information, phobia, misguidance and myths. Lack of proper guidance and knowledge ultimately proves expensive in more ways than can be imagined.

In writing these article, it is my ardent desire to provide useful, practical knowledge (including a few low fat low carb recipes for diabetic) to help people living with diabetes to make decisions that enable them to live successfully with diabetes.

To begin with, although 99% of you probably already know what diabetes is, I'd like to define it precisely so that at the end of this first article, we are all on the same page and do not have differing ideas on what diabetes is.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition in which your body cannot control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood because (a) your pancreas (not kidneys) does not produce enough insulin or (b) your body cells are resistant to the action of insulin, that's why we take insulin diabetic syringes.

When your blood glucose level rises, the glucose cannot get into the cells which means despite all the sugar, your body is deprived of energy. Lack of energy triggers the break down and conversion of fat and muscles into alternate source of energy. Always prefer to use diabetic glucose meter for checking your glucose level regularly

What goes wrong in diabetes?

Since the Glucose in your blood does not get utilized, it gets flushed out through urine. Meanwhile the body breaks down fat and muscle as an alternate energy source causing rapid (and dangerous) weight loss. Rapid break down of fat causes build up of toxic chemicals in your blood. If left unattended, all organs in the body begin to deteriorate and fail, ultimately leading to death – and a painful one at that.

Type 1 Diabetes

Myth: Diabetes begins with Type 1 and then progress to Type 2

Truth: Wrong! Type 1 and Type 2 are two totally different types of diabetes

People diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes do not produce any insulin. They need to be treated with insulin given by insulin syringes & injection or via diabetes Insulin Pump. (Insulin via a tablet would not be effective as it would be destroyed in the digestion process).

Type 2 Diabetes

This is the more common form of diabetes. Obesity is the primary reason for Type 2 diabetes. People diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes do not produce sufficient quantities of insulin. Initially your pancreas respond to the demand (created by obesity), by producing more insulin. However, it cannot do so indefinitely. Corrective action includes reducing body fat by checking through Body Fat Scales and leading a healthier lifestyle. If corrective action is taken soon enough, then people suffering from Type 2 diabetes need not take any medication such as glucose tablets or glucose supplements and can lead a healthy normal life. Failure to take corrective action will create a need for insulin injections to supplement the inadequate quantum of insulin produced by your pancreas.

Myth: Type 1 diabetes is serious

Truth: Yes and No. However Type 2 likely to be more harmful because people often have it for years before being diagnosed. Having it for years can lead to long term complications.

Now that we know what diabetes is, in my next article I shall attempt to answer the second most frequently asked question: Why does diabetes develop?
